Mario Williams 3 Sack game vs Colts

Mario Williams had himself a day vs the Colts, specifically Winston Justice (RT) on week 12 of the 2012 season.  Three sacks which I'll walk you through now.

FIRST SACK: 1st Quarter / 0:47 / 3rd and 10.

ABOVE: Mario Williams is lined up to the left on your screen.  He's in a 9-technique, lined up outside the TE.  The DT to his right is in a 2i, shaded to the right of the RG.  The other DT is in a 3-technique, and the right DE is in a 9-technique.  Situationally, it's 3rd and 10, pass pass pass all day. The 9-technique gets these quick edge rushers on an island with the Tackles.

ABOVE:  The TE releases for a route and Mario heads upfield.  The RT, Winston Justice, vertical sets at a 45 degree angle, kick slides.  The RG and Center are focused on the 2i DT.

ABOVE:  So far, the RT Winston Justice is in a good position, squared up, between Mario and the QB.  This is where Mario takes over.  Mario puts all his weight on his right foot, making an outside move, still about 2 yards away.  (Notice how much of an island Mario is on with the RT)

ABOVE:  Winston bites.  Winston turns his shoulders to the outside and Mario, 1 yard away now, plants hard with his left foot and attacks the inside of Justice.  That RG needs a miracle to get to the gap now.

ABOVE:  Mario uses the swim move to finish the assault on Winston Justice.  It's all in Luck's hands now.  He's gotta make throw.

ABOVE:  Luck steps up in the pocket, cocks his arm, but has no one up or doesn't feel confident enough to step into a throw.

ABOVE:  Anddddd Boom goes the dynamite.  Luck tried to use his legs to scramble but Mario was just too much.

SECOND SACK:  3rd Quarter / 1:57 / 3rd and 5.

ABOVE:  Mario in the 9 technique again, outside the TE.  Empty Backfield for the Colts.  3rd and 5, no RB, pass pass pass.

ABOVE:  The TE releases again and Mario heads straight up field, not at an angle to the QB.  Winston Justice (RT) is out on Mario quicker, at a flatter angle, almost daring him to try and go outside and around him.

ABOVE:  Mario takes a hard angle towards the QB, Winston Justice is still protecting the inside even though it looks like Mario has a pretty easy path outside.  This is the adjustment made by Justice, which is solid so far. NOTE:  Luck has such a clean pocket now, he has to get rid of the ball.

ABOVE:  Luck, relying on his legs like a young QB will do, tries to take off.  Mario plants his left foot, bull rushes the RT Winston, and closes the gap.

ABOVE:  Luck isn't use to Mario's speed.  Down goes Andrew.

THIRD SACK:  4th Quarter / 10:04 / 3rd and 2.

ABOVE:  Mario is on your right side now.  Still in a 9 technique, it's 3rd and 2 now though, not quite 100% pass situation.  You can't see but Luck is calling a WR in motion.

ABOVE:  WR in motion gets to the RT, ball is snapped, OL slides left like the play will be a jet sweep.  The TE stays still, doesn't block anyone, doesn't fire out.

ABOVE:  Play action!  The RB comes across and will run to the flats, the TE is running just a hitch.  Mario's eyes are huge.  He's unblocked coming full speed at Luck.

ABOVE:  Mario breaks a fundamental rule right here by leaving his feet, but he successfully blocks any attempt for Luck to throw the ball to the RB for a first down.  Luck's only option now is to run for the first down, which it looks like he'll be able to do.

ABOVE:  Wrong, Mario is a freak athlete and chases down a decent scrambler in Luck.  That's his 3rd sack, all on 3rd downs.  Those are big plays in football games, getting the defense off the field and ending drives.
